Job Description

We have a long history of helping current nuclear operations and new build projects manage their safety and risk in the civil and defence nuclear sectors. This provides opportunities for varied project work for our staff.                     

We are seeking a highly motivated Conventional Safety Engineer who is looking to build on their existing experience and become part of our team providing expert occupational safety and health support to our clients in the UK nuclear and other high hazard industries. 

           
Typical activities will include:

  • To provide occupational safety input into safety cases, including design safety cases
  • To provide occupational safety advice throughout the design process from conception to completed build
  • To chair and facilitate hazard studies to support project delivery
  • To advise on suitable occupational safety engineering for the protection of operators
  • Development of occupational safety strategies for both new and existing structures, including plant modifications and proactively work with design teams to identify, eliminate or manage conventional risks
  • Working with colleagues to deliver client needs to time and budget
  • Production of high quality technical deliverables to the agreed milestones and cost
  • Review, verification and approval of work produced by team members
  • Ability to clarify and agree project requirements at all levels
  • Assist with the preparation of estimates for projects or proposals

Profile

Essential Experience & Qualifications

  • Degree (or equivalent) in any relevant discipline e.g. Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Physics or Mathematics
  • NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health or equivalent
  • Graduate / Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (GradIOSH / CMIOSH)
  • In-depth knowledge of occupational safety principles, legislation and their interpretation and application to design and engineering
  • Able to apply occupational safety requirements in the context of design and engineering
  • Able to provide practical occupational safety solutions for design and engineering
  • Good report writing, written communication and presentation skills
  • Good communication skill
  • Fluent in English Language

Desirable Experience

  • Experience of  providing occupational safety and health advice and supporting documentation, for a range of facilities and nuclear hazard types, in a fit for purpose, proportionate manner in line with client expectations and arrangements
  • Experience of providing safety advise and support to CDM projects and sites
  • Specific experience of other relevant legislation and regulations including the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations, Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) Regulations, Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR) Regulations and Management of Health and Safety at Work (MHSW) Regulations
  • An understanding of nuclear safety cases and nuclear safety assessment
  • Experience in consultancy environment
  • Capable of reading technical and engineering drawings and engineering flow diagrams
  • Preparing safety training and safety documentation
  • Fluency in French
