Introduction to Assystem
Assystem is the second largest Nuclear Engineering organisation and provides technical engineering support across the world, supporting complex Nuclear New Build, Decommissioning and Defence programmes.
It is a fantastic time to join the industry. Nuclear in the UK, is seeing a recent renaissance with the UK government pledging it’s support for both large and small-scale nuclear energy projects.
The nuclear industry is expected to need possibly 100,000 new employees over the next decade. NCfN’s high‑level nuclear curriculum, range of qualifications and progression routes to jobs, underpin this predicted growth.
About the programme
We are currently looking for six nuclear scientist and/or nuclear engineer apprentices. This apprenticeship is currently delivered at the National College for Nuclear (NCfN) - Bridgwater & Taunton College. NCfN have been delivering the Level 6 Nuclear Scientist and Nuclear Engineer (Degree) Apprenticeship since 2017.
The apprenticeship will be across a Four-Year Delivery Model and requires you to attend the NCfN:
Year 1: Full time (five days a week) for the full duration of year one (approx. 34 weeks). Full-time model includes Performing Engineering Operations Units (PEO) this covers practical vocational engineering foundation skills. These units are:
· 019 Maintaining mechanical devices and equipment
· 033 Wiring and testing electrical equipment and circuits
· 039 Maintaining and testing process instrumentation
Year 2: Three blocks of four weeks (plus assessment)
Year 3: Three blocks of four weeks (plus assessment)
Year 4: Full time in the workplace There is significant study required outside of the College blocks, so apprentices will need additional support to allow time for this.
On programme training and assessment: The Assessment Plan has been developed to provide a structured, phased approach to enable the apprenticeship to be completed in accordance with the approved apprenticeship standard.
As part of the apprenticeship, apprentices will study towards either a BEng Electrical & Electronic Control with Nuclear, a BEng Mechanical Engineering with Nuclear or an FdSc Electromechanical Engineering (Nuclear).
Candidates will have achieved Grade C or above in at least five GCSEs including English, Math’s, and a Science subject.
They will also hold a minimum of 102 UCAS so either three A-Levels (at grade C or above including Maths and a Science subject) or, a relevant Level 3 qualification, such as a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma with a strong mathematical element.
